Danilo Kis ~ Psalm 44

just finished reading one of Danilo Kis’ early novels, Psalm 44. it takes shape in the musings and flashbacks of a mother in Auschwitz as she waits in the dark for the cue to flee in the middle of the night, the escape coming late in the war as the thunder of advancing Allied troops sounds in the background as she cradles her baby son in her arms, warming and drying his diapers with their body heat.
it’s Kis’ most open and bare setting of Holocaust suffering and survival writ small.
an utterly compelling work, as poetic as a book of this horrifying subject can be.
