John Eliot Gardiner ~ Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven

just finished reading John Eliot Gardiner’s impassioned retelling of J. S. BACH‘s life (mainly by an appreciation, deeply interpreted and inhabited, of a comprehensive knowledge of his liturgical music), Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven.
what an incredible experience.
especially hearing, as soundtrack for my two-week traversal of this epochal biography, Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s supple, magical readings of the Cantatas, the St. John and St. Matthew Passions and the b monir Mass.
Heaven.
following, a link to my fave movement of Harnoncourt’s b minor Mass. Caveat emptor on the video: it only bespeaks J.S. Bach’s ability to project his idealized cosmos and empathy for the lack between across the centuries to us.
