Andy Warhol’s Pictures of Me

Had a great time, early last March, playing a private concert in honour of Andy Warhol muse (and companion of Salvador Dali) Ultra Violet, at the home of a friend of mine who’d introduced me to Andy at our weekly chamber music soirees at his balconied Central Park apartment. I performed my arrangements of Lou Reed‘s songs for the Velvet Underground, All Tomorrow’s Parties and Venus in Furs in addition to pieces by Radiohead, Nick Drake, and Liszt. Lou’s widow, Laurie Anderson, was also in attendance, as was the director of Pittsburgh’s Warhol Museum, Eric Shiner. As serendipity would have it, I also performed my arrangement (amendments of my own to a mash-up by Liszt and Moszkowski) of the Prelude & Liebestod from Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, at which Ultra Violet exclaimed it was Dali’s favorite piece of music to listen to, when they were together, wearing out the disc til there was nothing but static left to hear.

I’d not previously been aware of these photos, I’m sure rediscovered thanks to Mr. Shiner in the Museum archives. As I’m in tails and pretty flushed and excited, I’m guessing these were taken at a Weill Recital Hall concert I gave with Andy in attendance. Thank you, Eric!

And special thanks to Hugh McGrory and Debra Anderson McGrory for putting this event together.
