just finished re-reading (i’d the privilege of reading an earlier version) Stephen Graham Jones’ now published perfect novel of the undead, The Gospel of Z. most of them strive for the anthropomorphic and lose entirely the meditative, intensely personal and shockingly intimate shades of potential in this genre; resurrection over reanimation. SGJ nails it, as always, and makes an unforgettable contribution to the genre and to contemporary letters. and it has such pace and atmosphere as to scare the shit out of you. i’d have to put Green Eyes, Lucius Shepard‘s incredible first novel at the head of the class, but The Gospel of Z is right behind, in my view, and would surely be cinematically superior even to that undercelebrated classic.
The Gospel of Z is a must-read in this or any genre.
